Should I choose neutral factors or hazards when designing my FlourishDx Work Factors Risk Assessment?

When selecting the work factors to include in your FlourishDx Work Factors Risk Assessment, you will be able to choose whether to use the Neutral or Hazard version/s of many work factors. To see the definition of each version of a work factor, click on the question mark next to the factor name.

The neutral version allows you to assess the degree to which the work factor is having a positive or negative impact on wellbeing, while the hazard version assesses negative wellbeing impacts only.

Why are there neutral and hazard versions?

Most work factors are not automatically positive or negative for workers. Rather, most work factors have a dose-response, or goldilocks, effect on people. That is, too little or too much of a factor can create distress, but the right amount of a factor can be beneficial. Using the Neutral version of a work factor helps you to assess the extent to which a work factor is beneficial, neutral, or harmful within a group of respondents.

Some work factors are never beneficial to workers, such as bullying or sexual harassment. For these types of work factors, a neutral version is not available, and users will not be able to choose a positive wellbeing impact.

Your assessment can include a mix of neutral and hazard work factors, but you cannot include the neutral and hazard version of the same work factor (e.g. you cannot include both the neutral Workload and the hazard Work Overload.

About the Neutral version

If you choose the Neutral version, users will first be provided with a neutrally worded definition of the work factor, and asked to reflect on whether the factor has had a positive impact, no impact, or a negative impact on their wellbeing.

If the user decides the work factor has had no impact on their wellbeing, they will progress to the next question.

If the user decides the work factor has had a positive impact on their wellbeing, they will be presented with a slider asking about the strength of positive impact.

If the user decides the work factor has had a negative impact on their wellbeing, they will be presented with three sliders asking about the severity, frequency, and duration of negative impact.

About the Hazard version

If you choose the Hazard version, users are provided with a definition of the work factor framed as a hazard, followed by three sliders asking about the severity, frequency, and duration of negative impact. The severity slider includes a 'No negative impact on my wellbeing' option, allowing respondents to indicate that the hazard is not impacting them or that they have not experienced the hazard.
